Blog Tour for SOULS by Ednah Walters {Review}

SOULS
(Grimnirs, book 2)

Eighteen-year-old Cora Jemison knows what it’s like to date a soul reaper. There are no Friday night movies, no school dances, and no stolen kisses between classes. It totally sucks! What makes it even worse, souls pop up when she least expects it. The last one is not her fault, but it all adds up to zero quality time with her super hot, scythe-carrying boyfriend, Echo.

Since Cora was etched with special runes by an evil Immortal, she understands why souls are drawn to her. She makes the best of it by helping souls find closure while Echo escorts them to the realm of the dead. Perfect partners, until a dark soul visits Cora in the dead of the night and Echo decides her soul-helping days are over.

Cora can either listen to Echo or follow her instincts. To make matters worse, other reapers start stalking her, demanding she hand over the soul. Even her Valkyrie friends think she’s gone too far. But something sinister is coming their way, and the soul is the key to saving her town, her friends, and her relationship with Echo. Can she convince Echo to see things her way before it’s too late?

WARNING: This is CORA'S story: This book may be considered NA (new adult) because it contains some swearing, violence and sex scenes: Suitable for ages 17 and up. A Clean Version will also be available on Amazon.

Reading Order:

My Thoughts:

I was so excited when I found out I was to to be a part of the Souls blog tour! I'm a big fan of Ednah Walters' Runes and Grimnirs series, and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen to my beloved characters next!

Ok, so first off- if you haven't read any of the other books in this series, I encourage you start with Runes. You'll get a lot of the background info, and be introduced to most of the characters. With that said, I really enjoyed Souls! I think it just might be my favorite book in either series.

I'll be honest when we were first introduced to Cora back in Runes, I didn't really like her that much. I didn't feel like I could relate to her. But then I read Grimnirs, which is told from Cora's point of view, and I quickly grew to adore that girl! I finally understood her, and figured out why things she said and did just did'nt click with me before. I have to say, I now prefer the stories told from Cora's point of view as opposed to Raine's! (But only by a narrow margin).

I just love the way that Cora connects and interacts with those around her. She's quirky, fun, doesn't take crap from anyone, yet she's kind and compassionate! We got to see more of her character grow and blossom in Souls. She's not one of those characters who is perfect though-  she does make mistakes, but she learns from them. The girl really does have a  good head on her shoulders!

Now. Let me just talk about Echo for a moment (who is also my new book boyfriend...shh). Where do I even start? *sigh*  He's gorgeous with his dark hair and green-gold eyes. He's also fierce, loyal, loving, and mysterious. Echo doesn't see those things within himself though. He has carried around a lot of guilt, burdens, and sadness for a long time. Some of the things he said broke my heart. He has faults, yes, but he knows that, and is trying to be a better person.

I loved that we got to hear more of Echo's story in Souls, as well as meet a few new characters! I hope we see more of them in the future books. Dev cracked me up and brought so much to this story. I was never bored while reading, and I was eager to turn the page to see what would happen next. There were times when I laughed, but there were times when I had  a few tears in my eyes.

My only complaint was that I wish that Souls was just a little bit longer. I would've liked more resolution at the end, and I really wanted to know more about what happened that night. ;)

I am definitely looking forward to the next book Witches! As much as I love Cora's point of view, I need to know how Raine is dealing with everything. I can't wait!

The TBR Tag!

I was tagged by Amy over at Once Upon a Book Blog to complete the TBR tag! This tag is hosted by Rachel from A Perfection Called Books and Dana from Dana Square.

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

I rely on Goodreads!  I have my overall to-be-read shelf, and then I have a shortlist shelf. I originally made  the shortlist because my TBR list was so huge, and I didn't want my most anticipated books to get lost in the shuffle. I was originally planning to keep my short list down to twenty or so books, but now there are 150 books on it. How did that happen? ;)  Seriously, though, I really need to narrow that down.

As far as my review TBRs go,  I have shelves on Goodreads for my Netgalley arcs and for my other arcs. Basically, if I don't have any stars on them, then that means that I need to read and review them. I also set my shelves so that I can view by 'date pub addition'.  This way,  I can just take a quick glance and see what needs to be read soon.

Is your TBR mostly print or E-book?

I definitely own way more e-books than paper books. However, I do not own all of the books on my TBR.  Thankfully my local libraries have a great selection of books that I would love to read sometime.

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

This is tricky. You see I am very much a mood reader. I've tried to make schedules and reading plans in advance, but they just do not work for me. I end up completely ignoring them!  I think this is because they tend to feel like assignments to me?  I only want to read for fun, so I just pick up what sounds appealing at the time.

I usually just go through my short list or one of my arc shelves and see if anything jumps out at me. Sometimes  people will be talking about a book on twitter, and I'll just decide to read that.  There's also the times that I'll be texting my friend Krista (from Krista's Dust Jacket) and she'll suggest some great book she's reading (we have similar taste in books).

A book that has been on your TBR the longest?

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I added this May 4, 2011!

A book you've recently added to your TBR?

Alex by Sawyer Bennett. Yay! A Hockey book!! This was recommended by Krista. :)

A book on your TBR strictly because of it's beautiful cover?

While I appreciate a pretty cover, I usually read the synopsis first. I've been burned too many times not to. But...

When I saw the cover for Sugar Daddy, I was immediately drawn to it. It's so eye-catching and  the colors are so bright. I'm also curious about the people on the cover. Thanksfully, a few of my friends said this was part of a pretty good series. Phew!

A book on your TBR that you never plan on really reading?

Uglies by Scott Westerfield.  This has been on my TBR for a few years, and I just keep hearing 'meh' things about it lately.

An unpublished book on your TBR that your excited for?

It's a tie between:

That Baby by Jillian Dodd and Bound by Flames by Jeaniene Frost!

A book on your TBR that everyone has read except you?

Haha! I can answer this question with a lot of books, but lately I keep hearing about:

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

A book on your TBR that everyone keeps recommending to you?

I love it when people recommend books to me! Lately, people are recommending:

 and
Stepbrother Dearest by Penelope Ward and Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

A book on your TBR that you're dying to read?

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

The number of books on your Goodreads TBR?

If you count my short list, it's 1023. :D

Now I am going to tag:

Review: Wish You Were Italian by Kristin Rae

Title: Wish You Were Italian
(If Only...#2) Can be read as a standalone
Author: Kristin Rae
Date Published: May 6, 2014
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Source: NetGalley

Pippa has always wanted to go to Italy … but not by herself. And certainly not to sit in art school the entire summer learning about dead guys’ paintings. When she steps off the plane in Rome, she realizes that traveling solo gives her the freedom to do whatever she wants. So it’s arrivederci, boring art program and ciao, hot Italian guys!

Charming, daring, and romantic, Bruno is just the Italian Pippa’s looking for—except she keeps running into cute American archeology student Darren everywhere she goes. Pippa may be determined to fall in love with an Italian guy … but the electricity she feels with Darren says her heart might have other plans. Can Pippa figure out her feelings before her parents discover she left the program and—even worse—she loses her chance at love?

My Thoughts:

I seek out books in which characters travel abroad and experience new places. It's a dream of mine to travel, and unfortunately I've only gone to one other country. When I read a book in which a person travels, I feel like I am living vicariously through them, and it thrills me to no end.

Pippa's parents have forced to spend a summer at an art school in Florence, Italy. Although she is an aspiring photographer, Pippa has no desire to attend art school or to follow the footsteps of her parents, who own an art gallery. When she arrives in Rome, she makes an impulsive decision that will change her summer entirely.

First off, I am so jealous of Pippa right now. Italy??

I loved how the author described the different places that Pippa visited. I sort of felt like I was there with her, because she described the colors, scents, and surroundings so vividly.  I loved the interactions that Pippa experienced with the people she encountered, and thought it was nice that she was trying to learn how to speak Italian.

I really liked the journal that Pippa's best friend, Morgan, gave to her. In this journal, Morgan suggested new things for Pippa to do and to try and experience while she was away. I just thought this was a really really cute and fun idea!  I think I just might make one of these journals if someone close to me ever decides to make a trip out of the country.

I really liked the guys- Bruno and Darren. Bruno was this cool, fun guy, even though he had some issues and what somewhat of a ladies man. My heart went out for him, as it seemed like he didn't really have anyone to help him through his difficult times. Darren was this friendly and sweet guy,  who was like the boy next door. I thought it was really cute how nervous he'd get around Pippa. Chiara was another character who I was especially fond of.  I don't think Pippa would have ever guessed that she would meet someone who would become like a sister to her, when she decided to go to Rome. Chiara was so nice and outgoing, and I loved how she had Pippa's back. She'd also talk sense into Pippa when she really needed it.

Pippa was really mature and independent, especially for seventeen. I have to say though, I was a bit surprised that she decided to go her own way right after arriving. Stunned even. While on the plane to Italy, she was so panicked and worried as she contemplated being alone to a foreign country that I found it surprising that she even changed her plans at the drop of a hat. As a parent, I would totally flip out if my daughter did this. My heart beats faster thinking about  it (don't judge). I really did not fully understand why Pippa did what she did until the end of the book.

There were times in the Wish You Were Italian that I wondered about all of the coincidences that occurred.  Were they likely or probable? Probably not. However, I chose to let them slide because I was having fun with the story.  Would I recommend this book to those looking for a fun, Teen/YA, standalone book? Absolutely.
