A Re-Read...and a Series Review! The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier

A few years ago, I read Ruby Red, by Kerstin Gier, and I just fell in love with it! At the time, the third book in the trilogy, Emerald Green, hadn't been released yet, so I decided to wait for it come out, before I started the second book, Sapphire Blue. Sadly, Emerald Green, has LONG since been released, and I did not finish the series until very recently.

Since I am taking part in the Re-Read Challenge, hosted by Hannah, at So Obsessed With, and Kelly over at Belle of the Literati, I decided that a re-read of Ruby Red was long overdue!

Although I had never seen him before, I recognized him immediately. I'd have known his voice anywhere. This was the guy I'd seen on my last journey back in time.

Or more precisely, the one who'd kissed my doppelganger while I was hiding behind the curtain in disbelief.

Sixteen-year-old Gwen lives with her extended - and rather eccentric - family in an exclusive London neighborhood. In spite of her ancestors' peculiar history, she's had a relatively normal life so far. The time-traveling gene that runs like a secret thread through the female half of the family is supposed to have skipped over Gwen, so she hasn't been introduced to "the mysteries," and can spend her time hanging out with her best friend, Lesly. It comes as an unwelcome surprise when she starts taking sudden, uncontrolled leaps into the past.

She's totally unprepared for time travel, not to mention all that comes with it: fancy clothes, archaic manners, a mysterious secret society, and Gideon, her time-traveling counterpart. He's obnoxious, a know-it-all, and possibly the best-looking guy she's seen in any century . . . .

WHEN I First Read

WHAT I Remember

This was my first, Young Adult, time-travel book and I enjoyed it so much! I remember loving Kerstin Gier's writing style and her characters. I really liked Gwen, and totally wished that I could go back in time, too! There was also the beginnings of a sweet romance.

WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

So many of the details were fuzzy! I could not remember names of important people or specific events. (I believe part of this is due to age, not because of the writing.) I also wanted to read the rest of the series and find out what else happened!

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

I could not believe how much I had forgotten, and I had a lot of, "oh yeahhh" moments. I would say that I enjoyed Ruby Red even more the second time around! I can't explain why, but the characters seemed more vivid, and I had stronger opinions about a couple of the characters this time around. I also had more questions as I read. This is a 5-star book for me. I immediately dived into book two, this time around.

WOULD I Re-Read Again

ABSOLUTELY. I have a feeling I would catch more things that I missed the first and second time that I read this.

Today we are going to talk about books that would make for great beach reads.

I have had this series on my radar for quite some time. One day, I was in a mood for something darkish and different. While browsing through my shortlist, I spotted Sins & Needles, and that seemed to fit what I was looking for. I definitely made the right call on that! I ended up reading the whole series back-to-back, including the short story- On Every Street. I don't know if you're "supposed" to read this novella before or after Sins & Needles, but I read it after, and I'm glad that I did! It gave me some great insight about Ellie's past. There had been this mystery element while reading Sin's & Needles, and I kept wondering, "who is Javier and what exactly happened there?!" On Every Street answered my questions and was definitely an asset to the trilogy. I also liked being introduced to Camden before I was introduced to Javier.

Like I said, I ended up reading this series without really stopping much (except when I had to do my pesky homework). Rather than reviewing each book individually, I decided to just wait to share my general feelings as a whole, and to be honest, some of the elements and time tables of what happened were a little blurred because I did not review or take notes in between books. (Sorry about that, guys.)

At the same time, the fact that I did read the Artist Trilogy in one go, says a lot about it, does it not? I would describe this series as being dark, gritty, compelling, honest, and suspenseful.

The characters:
Ellie Watt: I wasn't sure what to think about her at first. In the beginning, I thought that she was self-serving and selfish at times. She didn't really take a good look at the people around her and see them as individuals with feelings and a story. Therefore, was a wonderful to take a journey with Ellie and to see her grow and to learn things about herself.
Camden: I really liked Camden. Yes, he was beautiful with all his tats, height, and muscle. I absolutely loved his artistic side and how he could see within people. He wasn't all that he appeared to be.
Javier: I don't even know what to say about Javier, to be honest. He was so complex, conflicted, and really...crazy at times. Still, I found myself drawn to him and his mysteriousness. I kept wanting to read more scenes with him in them, even though he really scared me at times.

This was my first series by Karina Halle, and it certainly will not be my last! She has so much talent, and I love how she weaved together a captivating story and wrote about some interesting characters.

My Thoughts:

Okay, so one of the first things you have to know about me is that I'm a big hockey fan. Like, a HUGE hockey fan. I love to watch the games, even if my team isn't playing (Go Blues!). Oddly, though, prior to reading Alex, I hadn't read many books featuring hockey players. The hockey books that I have read were part the Off series by...Sawyer Bennett.

So awhile back, one of my good friends told me about Sawyer's book, Alex, and said that I really needed to read it. I kind of dawdled for awhile and set it aside. I'm not sure why, to be honest. Maybe I was afraid of being disappointed? I shouldn't have had doubts though, because I really enjoyed her Off series. Now, I could kick myself for not reading this sooner.

Alex turned out to be a really nice book! I'll be honest- I kept waiting for more scenes when Alex and his team were on the ice, and I loved reading about how his games went. It was also cute reading about how Sutton learned about the game. I remember doing that too! :)

My heart also went out to Alex when he told of his struggles with the game and how it wasn't fun anymore. Alex was such a complex character, and although he was gruff and often had a bad attitude, I was surprised that he wasn't worse than he was when you considered all of the things he had been going through.

I often find myself disliking NA heroines more often than not, but I actually liked Sutton! I admired her disposition and the life that she made for herself, despite her obstacles. She was just what Alex needed. I did get a little irritated with her towards the end, because I didn't think she fully comprehended Alex's situation, and felt like she was a little rash. Other than that, I think I would've liked to read more about their relationship and their dialogue.

I am really looking forward to the next book in this series- Garrett! He was one of my favorite characters and really put a smile on my face. I cannot wait to learn about his story in book two!

My Thoughts:

I am very happy to have had the opportunity to read another book by Quinn Loftis. She's one of my favorite author's, so when I found out she was writing a book about the Sandman, I new I had to read it! I'd never read a book about the Sandman before. Of course, I had heard about him, but I knew very little about the legend. I have to say that I really liked Quinn's take on this, and the direction that she went with the story.

Dream of Me focuses on two very strong, female characters. Sarah Serenity, is about to finish high school, and wants to move away from her small town and see the world. She's not sure what's she's meant to do with her life, but she is seeking to find her purpose. She's torn, because she is one of the most unselfish and caring people out there, and she always thinks of others first. However, she feels guilty about leaving her aunt and uncle, and others who love and depend on her. Then we have Emma, an eight-year-old genius, whose life is somehow connected to Serenity's. I don't want to give away to much, but I would like to say that I hope that I can one day have as much strength as this child did.

Then, we have Brudair (Dair). Oh my goodness. Who knew that the Sandman would be so hot? Not only that, but he was also very wise and kind. I also admired his strength and his dedication; it couldn't have been easy at times. I am so glad that this is a series, as I would really like to know more about him.

Raphael. I don't know how I can justly describe him. I must admit that I teared up a couple of times because of his diligence and compassion, and for just being who he was. All I can say is that I hope that we all have a Raphael in our lives. I'd like to think that we do. ;)

Dream of Me is a beautiful story about love, kindness, spirituality, and trust. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series, and finding out what happens next!

By the way, isn't the cover for Dream of Me is absolutely gorgeous?! I love everything about it, especially all of the gold. I must order a paperback copy soon.
